What is CAP?!?

The Community Access Program (CAP) is an Industry Canada initiative, created to provide Canadians with affordable public access to the Internet.  CAP provides funding to help communities establish and operate public Internet access sites, known as CAP Sites.

The Community Access Program is the key component of the Government of Canada's Connecting Canadian's initiative, to make Canada the most connected country in the world.  In an increasingly competitive and knowledge-based global economy, Canada can benefit by being a world leader in the development and use of advanced information and communications technologies.

Objectives of CAP

In keeping with the Connecting Canadians mandate, Industry Canada's CAP objectives include:

-     Providing Canada's rural and remote communities with better and more affordable access to the Internet, raising public awareness about its potential for crating jobs and growth

-     Providing communities with a means of communication, a way of doing business, and exchange information and/or ideas

-     Providing Internet training for anyone who wishes to enhance their knowledge about using the internet

Industry Canada's goal is to establish public Internet access sites in up to 10,000 rural, remote, and urban communities across Canada.  Industry Canada anticipates that as these communities coninue to link together, they benefit further from the synergy created through pooling resources and information.
